Not many airports can boast of being a must-see tourist destination in their own right. But Jewel Changi—Singapore Changi Airport’s latest extension—certainly deserves the title.
An unparalleled fusion of design, architecture and lush nature, this world-class lifestyle hub is the perfect way to experience Singapore’s many charms. Here’s a one-day guide to get you started!
9am: HSBC Rain Vortex [Level 1]
A marvel of modern engineering, the HSBC Rain Vortex is the centrepiece attraction of Jewel Changi. The world’s tallest indoor waterfall soars up to 40 metres, and is bound to inspire explorers who love both nature and architecture.
Start the day early with a leisurely stroll through the Shiseido Forest Valley. If you find a particularly charming spot and would like to have an impromptu picnic, there’s a wide array of breakfast and casual dining options at basement levels 1 and 2 available for takeaway.
Visitors craving a hot cup of Joe should drop by South Korean coffee chain dal.komm, while foodies looking to tickle their taste buds with local flavours can visit O’TAH. The latter serves up modern renditions of local classics like otah (spicy fish paste grilled in banana leaf) and nasi lemak (rice cooked in coconut milk, served with an array of side dishes).
11am: Shaw Theatres Jewel [Basement 2]
Next, make your way to Shaw Theatres Jewel for a bout of cinematic magic. With 11 cinemas, including an IMAX Theatre, this is an ideal place to catch a movie. Families travelling with their little ones can reserve a slot at Dreamers, the establishment’s kid-friendly cinema hall. Free entry is available for your child if he or she is below 90-centimetres in height.
After your movie, drop by Fairprice Finest—located on the same floor—for some souvenir shopping. This supermarket stocks an array of local ingredients and produce, such as kaya (a traditional jam made from coconut and eggs), cookies inspired by local flavours and even food-themed souvenirs like cushions and keychains.
1pm: Violet Oon Singapore [Level 1]
A doyenne of the local food scene, Violet Oon has been serving up classic Singaporean staples for decades. Violet Oon Singapore at Jewel Changi showcases a sumptuous array of staples from Peranakan*, Chinese, Indian and Malay cuisines. Expand your knowledge of Southeast Asian cuisine by digging into dishes like ayam buar keluak, Hainanese chicken rice, sayur lodeh and fish curry with roti prata.
*The term is an Indonesian/Malay word that means “local born”, which generally refers to people of Chinese and Malay/Indonesian heritage.
3pm: Stores across Jewel Changi
Walk off your hearty meal by exploring Jewel Changi’s myriad retail options. Half the fun is in discovering new ways to exude your individuality, but some highlights include the largest Nike store in Southeast Asia, as well as international brands like Coach, ZARA and Levi’s.
If you’re looking to spruce up your abode with uniquely Singaporean flair, consider dropping by Supermama. This gallery store stocks a variety of charming products, ranging from porcelain plates adorned with Merlion motifs to posters of our island.
The young (and the young at heart) who’ve ‘gotta catch ‘em all’ should certainly visit the Pokémon Centre. The only permanent retail store outside of Japan, this establishment stocks over 140 plush toys, making it the perfect place to hunt for a pokemon that expresses your individuality.
5pm: Changi Experience Studio [Level 4]
If the world of aviation has always been fascinating for you, this next stop is bound to expand your horizons.
The Changi Experience Studio is a virtual world of immersion and interactivity, where visitors can explore and be informed of the inner workings of an airport, engage with a slew of games and shows, and take part in a simulated race between a Porsche and a Boeing 747 jet. You’ll also get to try your hand at working as an airport security officer, and play games inspired by critical airport processes like aircraft turnarounds.
6pm: Canopy Park [Level 5]
As the sun sets on the Lion City, make your way to the Canopy Park, on the topmost floor of Jewel. This gorgeous playscape will certainly help you discover a childlike sense of wonder with its fusion of creativity, art and lush greenery.
Romp with your little ones amidst the surreal landscape of Foggy Bowls, lose yourself in the winding intricacy of the Hedge Maze or just take a relaxing stroll while admiring the delicate beauty of the Petal Garden.
8pm: Cloud9 Piazza [Level 5]
Conclude your visit with an unforgettable dinner at the Cloud9 Piazza. This event space houses a handful of charming eateries, with cuisine from all over the globe.
Burger & Lobster is a great option for gourmands in love with American comfort food, while those hankering for Japanese fusion should indulge in the decadent dishes at Tanuki Raw. If you’d like to dine (and drink!) like a local, Tiger Street Lab boasts bold brews and locally-inspired dishes like chilli softshell crab and hor fun (flat rice noodles) topped with an egg yolk.
